OF GOVERNMENT OF SINDH

COMMUNICATION & WORKS DEPARTMENT

  • This Department is responsible for planning, execution, development and maintenance of all Provincial Roads and Bridges through Annual Development Programme, Sugar Cane Cess and Foreign assistance. Currently a Road Network of 20,600 KMs. is being maintained by this Department. Apart from this 5633 Nos. of Government Buildings (except those belonging to Education, Culture and Forest Departments) are also being maintained by this Department under the expertise supervision of 429 Engineers.

  • To generate resources out of its own, lately Toll has been imposed on few Roads and Bridges, the Toll so collected is spent on their maintenance.

  • Two types of Roads on the basis of vehicular intensity and road length are constructed by this Department namely :

    a) Normal Roads.
    b) Farm to Market Roads.

    Normal Road Sub-Sector is further divided into three categories.

    1 Improvement: Widening and Reconditioning of existing Road Network.
         
    2 Construction: New Road in areas where communication facilities are lacing.
         
    3 Bridges : Replacement of existing Bridges and construction of new Bridges under Khushal Pakistan Programme (formal named as Poverty Alleviation Programme), the objective of which is to meet minimum requirements of the general / public, generate employment and accelerate the pace of development. The Department has been given a task of completing / executing mainly Roads scheme.
  • Communication & Works Department is also one of the major agency for execution of schemes in drought hit areas, about 121 KMs. of Road is expected to be constructed at a cost of Rs.369.00 million. Further schemes are under consideration for the long terms benefit of the people.

  • Under the administrative control of this Department a Research Laboratory for testing Engineering material is working which is located at Hyderabad.  

  • A Road Management Unit has also been established to act a Data Bank and prioritize Road for improvement through scientific maintenance management system.

  • A separate Project Unit is working under Project Director, based at Sukkur to monitor the execution of Foreign Aided Projects.

  • Apart from Administrative Wing Communication & Works Department has a strong Technical Wing, with six Chief Engineers, under whom 22 Superintending Engineers, 64 Executive Engineers and 323 Assistant Engineers are working to execute the engineering works at par with International standards.
