The Irrigation and Power Department is the
backbone of Sindh Province. The irrigation
network of Sindh is controlled through three
barrages, namely Gudu Barrage (commanded
area 2.179 million acres), Sukkur Barrage as
(commanded area 7.63 million acres) and
Kotri Barrage (commanded area 3.006 million
acres) and command the total areas of 12.815
million acres. Sukkur Barrage as a singly
source is the largest unified irrigation
infrastructure in the world. The network of
three barrages spread through 581.63 miles
feeders, 1554.18 miles main canals, 3050.12
miles branch canals and 8049 miles
distributaries.
The department has to execute large number
of development schemes and mega projects to
improve irrigation supply to culture – able
areas, control over salinity to rehabilitate
the salinity affected lands in order to
boost up the national economy as well as to
alleviate the poverty particularly from
rural areas of Sindh. Besides, this drinking
water is also supplied to hundred of cities
and towns in Sindh Province including
Karachi and Hyderabad.
