BRIEF HISTORY OF THE
DEPARTMENT
The
Excise Department was created in the year 1908, in
Bombay Presidency which then included Sindh, under the
Commissioner of Customs who also exercised jurisdiction
over Salt, Opium and Customs Department, Thereafter
under the decentralization scheme, administration of
Salt, Excise and Opium Department, 1922, overall control
remained with Commissioner of Customs, Bombay
presidency, However in the Year 1936, Sindh became a
full fledged separate province and the Revenue
Commissioner, Sindh became the controlling authority of
these department.
After the creation of
Pakistan in1947 , Karachi was declared as Federal
Capital. Although Karachi Administration took over the
control of various departments on 23rd July,
1948, the Deputy Commissioner (Excise), Sindh continued
to be the head of Karachi Excise till 15th
February, 1952.
On 27th
October, 1959 when Rawalpindi was declared as interim
Capital of the Federal Government, Karachi ceased to be
a federally administered area and eventually merged with
the defunct province of West Pakistan in 1961, as a
Division. The Excise Department, Karachi was merged in
the West Pakistan Excise and Taxation Department which
was created in April, 1962 as an independent tax
collecting agency and was forerunner of the existing
Excise & Taxation Department Sindh.
